4G: LTE 700 MHz auction on 16 November

ARCEP has published a tweet that allows us to learn a little more about the opening of the auction for the 700 MHz band to be used for 4G networks of mobile operators. The auction will begin on 16 November.

The auction of the 700 MHz band to improve existing 4G networks in France follows its merry way. The call for applications was launched last July 9 and operators had until 29 September to submit their entries. In all, four mobile operators have filed their cases. Not surprisingly, Orange, SFR, Bouygues Telecom and Free Mobile had therefore affirmed their will walk away with a share of the cake in 700 MHz to improve coverage and data rates. ARCEP then plans to issue the 700 MHz band use authorizations before the end of 2015 with an effective transfer (and thus likely marketing) to operators between April 5, 2016 and June 30, 2019 according regions.

700 MHz: a golden frequency band

Remember that the 700 MHz band will allow operators to increase the rates of their 4G network through carrier aggregation (giving 4G +), but also improve the coverage of the territory. Indeed, the 700 MHz band door further and better penetrate buildings that bands 1800 and 2600 MHz. It must be, in almost exactly equivalent to the band of 800 MHz already operated by Orange, SFR and Bouygues Telecom. It is Free Mobile which is the applicant for some of this 700 MHz since the operator currently only operates in the 2600 MHz band and begins to deploy antennas in the 1800 MHz band released in part by other three incumbents.

However, as ARCEP had said during the presentation of auction draft last June, a single operator can not walk away with the entire 700 MHz band. In fact, Free Mobile could leave with a maximum of 3 x 5 MHz (15 MHz duplex) and each incumbent with two blocks of 5 MHz. But ARCEP auctioned six lots of 5 MHz each and the auction could be aggressive
